What is Direct Primary Care

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a model of healthcare delivery that is an alternative to traditional fee-for-service and insurance-based models. With DPC, patients pay a low/affordable monthly fee and in exchange receive unlimited visits, extended appointment times, increased access to the physician. DPC physicians can take care of 80-90% of most people’s healthcare needs. DPCs do not accept insurance. Instead, the focus is on providing high-quality, personalized care at an affordable price point.

The difference between Direct Primary Care and Concierge

There seems to be a lot of confusion about what Direct Primary Care is. This is referred to by some as “Concierge” care. The two models are different. DPC can be considered Concierge-for-all care. However, there are a few important differences.
– DPC provides all medical care for one affordable monthly fee while Concierge practices bill insurance but also charge a “retainer fee” for increased access (24/7).
– DPC costs less than most people’s monthly cell phone bill while Concierge retainer fees can be quite a bit higher.
– DPC practices typically focus on preventative care and chronic disease management, personalized care while Concierge practices charge for extended services to more wealthy patients.

Both models practice medicine in this way to provide increased time and access for patients.

What Direct Primary Care is not

Direct Primary Care is not insurance, and therefore does not require deductibles and copays for visits. DPC does not cover for hospitalizations, specialists or pharmacy benefits, so supplemental/major medical insurance is recommended. DPC does not accept or bill insurance.
